Principal Message: Dear Parents, Guardians and Students, January has been pretty hectic! With the amount of snow days, a professional development day, and midterms, it feels like we have not had a consistent period of time to get back into the swing of things. I am sure that will change soon with February around the corner (at least until we get into February Break). Here at BMR we continue to move forward with staff and students actively engaged in the classroom and with the various events scheduled throughout the month. Please take a look at our pages for Winter highlights and future events. Quarter 2 Report Cards have been posted onto X2 and are available in your parent portal as a PDF file. Term 3 will end on April 5th. We invite you to review your students Report Card and contact your students teachers should you have any questions or concerns as it pertains to his/her grades or Learning Expectation evaluation. Please take a look and see what we have in store this month! Various events are scheduled including music events, NHS Empty Bowl Dinner, and our Spring Concert. Hope to see you all there. Stay warm! The FLU: How to stay healthy It is now influenza season in Massachusetts. Influenza (the flu) is an infection of the nose, throat and lungs caused by an influenza virus. The flu virus spreads from person to person by means of droplets from coughing, sneezing or talking. These droplets may travel over 18 feet in distance. They may also be spread by touching something with the flu virus on it and then touching your eyes, mouth, or nose. You may be contagious from 1 day before symptoms develop until 5-7 days after becoming sick. Students should remain at home until 24 hours after the fever is gone without the use of fever-reducing medications. It is important to remember, you may still be contagious after your fever is gone. Flu symptoms include: fever, cough, body aches, fatigue, weakness and chills and typically come on quicker and more severe than a cold. The number one preventative action is proper hand washing. Wash hands often with regular soap and warm water for at least 20 seconds with vigorous rubbing action. If soap and warm water are not available, use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer. Sanitizers will kill germs on the hands but do not remove dirt. Also, avoid touching your eyes, mouth and nose. The flu virus may live for more than 2 hours on surfaces. Cover your mouth and nose when coughing or sneezing with a tissue or your arm. Throw the tissue away in the trash and wash your hands every time you cough or sneeze. Avoid close contact with other people especially while you still have symptoms or with sick people if you are healthy. Clean and disinfect surfaces and objects that may be contaminated with the flu virus. The flu vaccine is recommended yearly to protect against the flu virus. Although there are many types of flu viruses, the vaccine contains 3 or 4 of the most prevalent for that year. It is available as injection and offered at doctor’s offices, drug stores, and flu clinics. If you do become sick, most people are able to recover at home without medical care. However, some will develop more serious complications from the flu, especially those with other chronic medical conditions. Please consult your health care provider for advice especially if you are high risk and be examined if recommended by your doctor. Remember, if you feel ill, stay home.
