Please visit your mobile device app store and download it free (search "Blackstone-Millville Schools") and visit us online at http://bmrsd.net! I would like to provide you with an update on three major aspects pertaining to the high school. Each of these aspects contains a link to additional information. As a community of learners, we consistently reflect on best practices to support teaching and learning in our building. All three items addressed below will focus on personalized learning, assessments, and restorative discipline. Please contact me if you have any questions. Flex 20 Period (beginning 1/28/20) A daily 20-minute time period will be dedicated during the school day where students will have the opportunity to gain the skills for success with each teacher and course during a 7-day cycle. A personalization block encompassing advisory, enrichment, and/or intervention will allow students to work with their teachers to support their academic needs, interests, and areas of exploration. Flex block will be scheduled at the end of 1st period, allowing teachers to specifically work with students assigned during that time. Restorative Program (Formerly known as Central Detention; beginning 1/28/20) Program Outline: This model provides each student with an opportunity for deeper behavioral reflection while still holding the students accountable. Students will be responsible for completing a reflection exercise that leads them through the process of identifying their behavioral missteps and determine what changes they can make moving forward. The Restorative Time staff member will explain the reflection activity and the expectations for its completion. Each student will then meet with the assistant principal to review their reflection and make a plan of action moving forward to address/change behavior. (Infractions leading to restorative program: tardiness, insubordination, cell phone violation, and any other student handbook violations equaling a “central”) Schedule: Monday-Thursday (2:05-2:50pm) Semester Assessments Alternatives to traditional end-of-course assessments will be implemented during the 2019-2020 academic year. In order to further promote student learning and create a more authentic means of student demonstrating what they have learned at the higher levels of Bloom’s Taxonomy, students will have the opportunity to show what they know through poster sessions, portfolios, reflective papers, student-proposed projects, and alike.
