Updates from our Health Office:Health Office Reminders During the week of April 9th, 9th grade students will be screened for scoliosis. This screening is not a diagnostic service, but may identify postural problems which may need medical attention. To opt out of this screening, I must receive notification in writing by the parent/guardian prior the screening or a copy of a current physical (less than 12 months since the date of the physical). All athletes need a current physical on file in the health office. The physicals are good for 13 months. Please send in updated physical if it will expire during the season. I must receive a paper copy of the physical for the athlete to remain eligible to participate. All 10th grade students are required to provide an updated physical exam. If you have not submitted one, please do so as soon as possible. The health office does not dispense allergy medications including eye drops. If your child suffers from springtime allergies, it is best to give these medications at home. If they will need to be given during school hours, I must have a doctor’s note, even for over-the-counter medications, and the medication must be brought into school in its original packaging. Any questions, please contact me at (508) 876-0110 or [email protected]. Thank you, Karen Young, BSN, RN, HS Nurse Surviving Spring Allergies As we say goodbye to winter and the cold and snow, not only do we get longer days and warm weather but many of us will experience springtime allergies. The wet winter leads to a heavy pollen season and the cold weather delays the start of the trees pollinating. In the northeast, the trees will typically pollinate starting in mid-March and ending late May/early June. Pollen counts are highest early- to mid-morning and on dry, windy days. This year, the spring season will be condensed with the late start and has the potential for higher than usual pollen counts. This in turn can lead to more severe allergy symptoms. Allergy symptoms, also called rhinitic symptoms, include: nasal congestion, runny nose, post-nasal drip, sneezing, itchy nose, mouth, and/or throat, and red, itchy, watery, and swollen eyes. In addition, allergies can trigger asthma for those who suffer from both conditions. Medication should be started approximately a week before the season begins. Oral antihistamines and steroid nasal sprays are often very effective for controlling symptoms. Several oral antihistamines are available over the counter and two steroid nasal sprays are also. Other nasal sprays are available by prescription from your doctor. Decongestant nasal sprays should be avoided except for very short-term use (3-5 days) since they cause increased congestion from a drug-induced rebound effect. Nasal steroid sprays work best when used daily as prescribed. They should be sprayed towards the outer side of your nose rather than the middle where they can cause irritation. Remember opposite hand to nostril – use your right hand to spray into your left nostril and vice-versa. Saline rinses may also be helpful with nasal congestion. There are things you can do to try to minimize exposure to pollens:
