Principal's Message:Dear Parents, Guardians and Students, As we begin to prepare for the 2020-2021 academic school year, I would like to provide you with some information to help shape what our school year may look like. Additionally, I would like to highlight some end of year activities as well as some pre-planning activities for the summer. This will be the first of two summer newsletters to the community. A "return and recovery" team has been created to review the Department of Education "Initial Fall School Reopening Guidelines." As we move through this work, our primary focus will be to safely bring back as many students as possible to an in-person school setting. We are committed to draft a plan that will maximize learning and address our students' holistic needs. By the beginning of August, we will communicate with the community three (3) fall reopening plans/models: 1) in-person learning with new safety requirements; 2) a hybrid of in-person and remote learning; and 3) remote learning. This newsletter also contains several live links and videos. You will also find important dates, tips to engage your child in learning, and school updates. We ask that you look at our newsletter closely and review the links embedded in this newsletter. Social media and a plethora of communication outlets are embedded in our website. Several twitter accounts and online blogs have information and current school happenings in them. We also ask that you update your emails on the parent portal. We hope to be able to invite families to in-person Freshmen Orientation, Meet the Teacher Night, Homecoming Weekend and Marching Band Home Show. Once we have these event dates we will share them with you. We love to have the support of our community and I am certain our students do as well! Please watch for School Council dates and information in the next month or so as we will need interested parents serving on our Council. Becoming a member of our Council serves as an outlet to respectfully voice concerns and ideas to improve our learning community. Lastly, I would like to wish all of you a happy and relaxing summer and eagerly await students and parents back to school. Each year provides us with an opportunity to improve ourselves and the experiences we face. Here’s to a new school year! CHARGER STRONG. Sincerely, Michael Dudek [email protected] @medudekpl @BMRgoCHARGERS @BMRStrong @BMRathletics @BMRHScounseling @BMRbands @CHARGERS_STUCO @BMRNHS Dear Parents/Guardians/Students, We are happy to announce that BMR students, faculty, and staff will be participating in a One School, One Theme summer reading endeavor. This year’s theme is “Together in Crisis.” While this theme originated from our time amidst a pandemic, the nation-wide protests calling for a deeper awareness of how racism affects our country led us to a focus on the crisis of racism and how we can actively become an anti-racist community. Through an inclusive process of book selection, and the ultimate decision to give students a choice between several highly popular books, we have come up with the following options:
Upon return to school in the fall, BMR students will participate in a day of workshops devoted to standing together in crisis. This experience is intended to be a celebration of community here at BMR. Students will also complete an exploratory project in their assigned English class in the fall. This project will also center around the importance of standing together in times of crisis. THEME: Together in Crisis (click here for the Flyer, https://tinyurl.com/ydh25o2y). Requirements for students: -Read ONE of the three summer book options OR submit an online Google Form by the end of June. -Have a good working knowledge of the plot, characters, and theme of being together in crisis presented in the book. -Be prepared to participate in discussions, activities, and create an exploratory project about standing together in times of crisis at the beginning of the year in English class. -For extra credit, students may also complete a 5 Moments Sheet (https://tinyurl.com/ydcnwmo2) Please be aware that, since some of these books are centered on teenage protagonists, or take place during times of racism or social injustice in history and society, readers may come across occasional strong and/or offensive language, which is intended to realistically reflect young adult discourse and accurately portray the times presented. Similarly, due to the protagonists’ ages, references and innuendos to sex and/or violence may also occur in the reading. Please trust that while the strong language, sexual innuendos, and violence exist, they by no means distract from the larger and more important thematic issues of standing together in times of crisis. *Check out the LIBBY APP for free downloads of some of the summer reading books. *IN ADDITION, The New York Times is inviting all high school students to participate in their summer reading contest! If you would like to participate in this contest take a look at this website. New content is updated weekly. *Additional summer work in Math is posted on our website. We thank you for your support and hope our students enjoy this year’s summer reading! To our BMRSD Parents, Families, and Friends, |
