PRINCIPAL MESSAGE: Dear Parents, Guardians and Students, Warmer days are with us as we begin to prepare for MCAS, AP exams, and Spring sports. The past several months have come and gone and we have a lot to celebrate and look forward to. As we begin to think about spring activities, we must focus in on our end goals. Are you striving to earn straight A's for the fourth quarter or win the class elections and become an officer? How about making the playoffs and becoming a Dual Valley Conference All-Star? In order to reach your goals, you must have a plan in place. Remember that you have the support of faculty and staff at BMRHS to get you to your end goals. Let us "Finish Strong" and make this the best quarter yet! Please take a look at the calendar filled with various school events. In addition, Quarter 3 Report Cards have been posted onto X2 and are available in your parent portal as a PDF file. We invite you to review your daughter/sons' Report Card and contact your students teachers should you have any questions or concerns. Do not miss out on the many events planned for the rest of the year. We would love to see you there! Happy Spring! CHARGER STRONG. Sincerely, Michael Dudek [email protected] Superintedent Message: I hope this communication finds you and your family well. I am out reaching to formally notify you that we have a couple of important changes to our calendar for this current school year. As you know we had one snow day this year, and as a result, we should be going to school until Monday, June 17th. However, we are going to move that half day of school for students to Friday, May 24th which was originally scheduled to be a day off for our students. That means that our students will in fact to get out on Friday, June 14th as initially planned. That Friday, June 14th will be a full day for students. If you have any questions please do not hesitate to get in touch with your child's principal or with my office. We are hopeful that these changes will better accommodate your family's needs. Very respectfully, Jason DeFalco, EdD. Superintendent A BMRHS STUDENT SCHOOL ATTENDANCEHow can you help? Make school attendance a priority • Talk about the importance of showing up to school everyday, make that the expectation. • Help your child maintain daily routines, such as finishing homework and getting a good night’s sleep. • Try not to schedule dental and medical appointments during the school day. • Don’t let your child stay home unless truly sick. Complaints of headaches or stomach aches may be signs of anxiety. Help your teen stay engaged • Find out if your child feels engaged by his classes and feels safe from bullies and other threats. Make sure he/she is not missing class because of behavioral issues and school discipline policies. If any of these are problems, work with your school. • Stay on top of academic progress and seek help from teachers or tutors if necessary. Make sure teachers know how to contact you. • Stay on top of your child’s social contacts. Peer pressure can lead to skipping school, while students without many friends can feel isolated. • Encourage meaningful afterschool activities, including sports and clubs. This is an exciting time for student leaders to gather together and not just enjoy our time but to learn new skills on how to enhance our leadership skills. The first major aspect of this annual MASC conference trip is the Polar Plunge. This is designed for us to raise money as a school for the Special Olympics organization. The Polar Plunge also has a costume contest. This year our student council dressed up as Mickey and Minnie Mouse. Our council raised over $600 for this amazing fundraiser and had a great time taking the plunge! We were also incredibly lucky this year to have three delegates present a workshop for 45 students! Jacob Chaplin led the workshop alongside Cassandra DeMotte and Susana Valdes. The workshop, “The Towers of Teamwork Traits,” emphasized a group’s ability to work well with different leadership and teamwork traits. One way they demonstrated this was by highlighting how bad communication occurs when group members are not able to speak openly with other group members. This workshop helped to teach students how to adapt to certain teamwork constraints and encouraged students to thrive under conditions even if they are not ideal for project development. All of our delegates also attended four workshops each that had unique lessons and ideas on ways to develop new leadership skills, as well as new ways to work as a team. The workshops also addressed challenges that all people face while serving in student council. Some of the workshop topics included facing anxiety, developing ways to not fear asking for help, and also spreading happiness and kindness. Our council also attended the election speeches where delegates from other schools were attempting to become part of the MASC state executive board. These election speeches consisted of many different individuals with all different campaigns. We were happy to assist in the development of an amazing executive board. Another major part of the conference is the two different guest speakers that come to us from across the country to inspire us and lead us in the right direction in life. The first guest speaker encouraged using perspective to find your path in life and how some people may not see you as smart in one field but a genius in another. The other guest speaker shared a new view on what it means to “FAIL”. They described it as the “First Attempt In Learning.” This inspired us to move on past our mistakes. The MASC conference concluded with everyone's all-time favorite event--dinner and dancing. Every council dressed up in semi-formal attire and enjoyed an elegant dinner of chicken, ravioli, salad, and to top it off, decadent chocolate cake. This year our council chose to wear black with red accessories to match our Minnie and Mickey Mouse theme from the Polar Plunge. After dinner we went to the ballroom for an awards ceremony. The night ended with over 1000 excited student leaders brought together by good music and a dance floor. Students danced the night away while creating unforgettable memories that will last a lifetime. BMR MUSIC CONTINUES TO CHARGE ON!The BMR Music Department had a successful end to their winter season. Over the course of two weekends: the BMR Winter Guard won 1st place at NESBA Finals in Division Scholastic Class AA, capping off an undefeated season, the High School Wind Ensemble received a gold medal at the MICCA (Massachusetts Instrumental, Choral Conductor's Association) State Concert Festival, the High School Concert band received a bronze, the 8th grade band received a gold medal and the 7th grade band received a silver medal. In addition, the BMR Winter Winds/Percussion finished their season strong with a first-place finish in Scholastic Open Class, scoring very competitively with other Open Class specialties. Upcoming events include the High School Wind Ensemble performing at Symphony Hall in Boston on May 4th at 1:50 PM, and BMR's Jazz Night in the BMR cafeteria on Friday, May 3rd at 7 PM. Mr. Roe Wins Parteners in Excellence Award!Mass Insight Education & Research has named Mr. Ethan Roe a Partners in Excellence Teacher Award recipient for his exemplary work in their AP STEM and English Program. Mr. Roe one of 29 Massachusetts AP teachers who has been recognized for his outstanding contributions to student success during the 2017-2018 academic year. As an honoree, Mr. Roe was presented with a plaque and $750 check at the 7th annual Partners in Excellence Award Celebration, which was held on April 10, 2019 at The College of Holy Cross in Worcester, MA. On behalf of the BMRSH community, we would like to sincerely thank Mr. Roe for his commitment to not only his students but in his craft. S’Park Awards Honor Media Mentors Including Damien Gaudet The Roy H. Park School of Communications at Ithaca College recognized two outstanding media mentors from across the United States with S’Park Media Mentor Awards. The annual awards honor high school teachers and advisers who are committed to igniting a passion for media in their students. Mr. Damien Gaudet was invited to an award dinner and reception at the college. While on campus, he met the advisers and managers of the Park School’s own nationally acclaimed student media outlets and learned about the Park Scholar Program, which provides full-cost-of-attendance scholarships for communications students. “The Park School is privileged to sponsor many great speakers and events, but the S’Park Media Mentor Awards program is my favorite,” said Diane Gayeski, dean of the Park School. “Each of our awardees inspires high school students to see media as powerful tools to shape the society that they will inherit, and they instill a culture of excellence in their cohorts. Over the years, the mentors have become a wonderful pipeline for some of our most talented students and we appreciate the opportunity to forge relationships with students who may not otherwise have heard of Ithaca College or thought that a Park School degree could be in their futures.” WHAT: The Chargers Parent Connection is the high school “PTO.” MEETING: Wednesday May 15th at 6:30 PM at the high school.
